Hello. My name is Jacques le Sueur and I'm a pen & ink artist based in Cape Town, South Africa. I've spent my life adventuring the world, entertaining as a magician at parties & events...
Everywhere from palaces in Austria to the jungles of the Congo, it's given me a unique lens through which I see the world. Drawing is a meditation, my alphabet for processing the universe around me.
I'm fascinated by my audiences, the people I meet, the faces, especially those ancient souls who look as if they've been reincarnated several lifetimes over. This is especially evident in the eyes, and it's this I try capture in my portraits.
“Photography is an immediate reaction, drawing is a meditation.”
– Henri Cartier-Bresson
My work is in pen and ink using a combination of stippled dots and fine lines. I use a range of Micron pens with nibs ranging from 003mm upwards and highlights are done with a fine brush and gouache paint. Pieces are generally A3 in size but occasionally range up to a meter wide. Ink is an unforgiving, detailed medium but I love the depth and emotion it allows me.
The bulk of my work is portraiture done in archival ink. Each piece is available as a giclee print on Hahnemuhle Museum Etching Paper, released in limited editions.
Once you order your piece it's printed with archival ink on Hahnemuhle Museum Etching Paper, signed in pencil and numbered.
Print runs vary, but once the numbered run is over no more will be printed of that piece. Have a look through the gallery here.
Original pieces are available to serious collectors. I display new work to my email list once a month, if you'd like to get on board sign up here. I also send out occassional correspondence about gallery work and other news. Looking forward to having you on board.
If you have a theme you'd like me to illustrate or would like a portrait done click one of the buttons to the right and let me know what you have in mind.
Schedule permitting, I'd love to work with you.
